There are SO many questions when you start buying locally. Below are a few questions we are commonly asked. If you don’t see a question you are curious about……please ask. We will get in touch with you, and just might add your question to the list!!!

COWS: What breed of cows do you have?

We are currently milking Registered A2A2 Jersey and A2A2 Brown Swiss. We love the complexity of milk these 2 breeds bring to our Creamery.

Jersey Cows are known for their rich, cream topped milk. Great for butter, cream in your coffee, whipping cream, ice cream, and generally a rich creamy taste in your milk.

Brown Swiss often have much smaller butterfat molecules leading to a slower rising cream line. This makes for a very clean, light and yet still creamy taste in your glass of milk. Swiss have a high protein content and their milk is highly regarded as an excellent choice for cheese making.

CALVES: What do you do with your calves?

Our Milk Cows are bred back according to our needs and the needs of The Farmstore. Our beef-y-er girls are generally bred to Registered Beef Bulls, and we raise up these beef cross for our table and for yours.

Our Finer framed cows are bred to Registered A2A2 Dairy Bulls. We hand raise and bottle feed these calves to grow up and be our milking replacement heifers if/when this need arises. It’s critical to us to keep a closed herd, as we have had great success calving out our stock.

A closed herd simply means, we’d rather not bring in animals from other farms that could potentially carry contagious disease and infect our girls. Therefore, we simply ‘grow our own.

HEIFERS: What do you do with heifers?

Because we don’t push our cows to maximum production they tend to live much longer and have many fewer health problems. This allows us to keep our milk cows on our Farm, for a very long time. It also gives us the awesome opportunity to hand raise Registered A2A2 Homestead Heifers for YOU and YOUR FUTURE HOMESTEAD/FARMSTEAD! (click the link to learn more)

MILK PICK UP: What do I bring for my first pick up and those thereafter?

As Members of our Farmstead, we will share with you an insulated bag with handles to hold your Farmstead Staples & Goods. This bag will help keep your milk cold and your Goods together.

It’s imperative that you don’t take long getting your fresh Milk into refrigeration. Like we mean, ASAP.

If you have other stops or a longer drive home and the weather is warm, we strongly recommend that you bring an ice cooler to set your bag inside of, or bring extra ice packs to sneak inside the bag. This is particularly important during the hotter months. We can’t stress enough, the importance of keeping your milk FRIGIDLY COLD. It will stay the sweetest and last the longest if kept at 38-39 degrees. That’s pretty chilly!

NOTE: Upon your return visit to pick up your next order, simple return your CLEAN jars and lids in the same pick up bag. We will swap you for a freshly filled bag, making it a smooth and quick pick up. 🙂

If you are ordering items that are NOT RAW MILK RELATED, we will supply you with a recyclable paper bag.
